What are Essential Oils?

Have you ever wondered what an essential oil really is? It’s not surprising if your answer is YES. Just like you, at Blissful Essential Oils & Aromatics we are consumers as well, and we want to be sure we are using and making quality products; Understanding the science behind essential oils certainly helps.

In short, essential oils have been used for centuries, as a holistic and alternative way of healing and wellness. Essential oils are obtained through mechanical pressing or distillation. Each essential oil has a unique composition of chemicals, and this variation affects the smell, absorption, and effects on the body. The chemical composition of an essential oil may vary within the same plant species, or from plant to plant.

We don’t know for certain how essential oils got their name but most sources suggest “essential” was derived from essence or the essence of a plant, and oil because when distilled, the aromatic “essence” that was extracted from the plant had a similar property to fats and oils. However, essential oils are not fats, lipids, or fatty oils; they are the exact opposite. There are many health benefits to using essential oils, and there is a difference in the grade of oil that you use.

Whether a person uses essential oils is up to the individual. It isn’t a decision a scientists or doctor can make. At Blissful Essential Oils & Aromatics we have a team of certified aromatherapists working together to produce quality and therapeutic grade oils and products, products that can be used for many health benefits. Stay tuned for future blogs on these topics.
